What are E cigarettes (also known as Electronic Cigarettes), and what benefits do they offer over traditional tobacco cigarettes? One benefit is that they allow a person to “smoke” wherever they like, without objectionable smoke and odor. With the rising cost of smoking, electronic cigarettes may allow you to save money as well. In addition to their other benefits, they are also thought to be far less harmful than tobacco.

An e-cigarette is generally composed of three components: a mouthpiece or cartridge, an atomizer, and a battery. The atomizer is the part that does the actual work of vaporizing the liquid solution contained in the cartridge, and the battery provides the power necessary. The liquid solution varies by manufacturer, but generally it contains nicotine, flavoring, and a base (usually propylene glycol). The base is used to provide a satisfying “smoke, ” as well as to transport the nicotine and flavorings in a vapor. Automatic e-cigarettes allow the user to simply “puff” on the cigarette, which triggers the atomizer automatically. There are other models that require the user to press a button while smoking.

Since e-cigarettes don’t burn anything, they require no flame and they produce no ash. This eliminates the need to carry a lighter or to have an ashtray available. What’s more, since a single cartridge holds the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes, it is far more compact.

Due to the fact that e-cigarettes produce only a vapor or mist, they can be used in many places where smoking is prohibited. The “smoke” they produce is generally odorless, and won’t stain clothing or walls and ceilings. They offer an excellent compromise to accommodate non-smokers in an enclosed area.

Many people believe e-cigarettes are more expensive than tobacco cigarettes, but this simply is not the case. While they do often require a modest initial investment, most suppliers offer refilling fluid (e-fluid) at very affordable prices, which actually makes an electronic cigarette far less-expensive (overall) than the ever-increasing cost of tobacco cigarettes. While estimates vary, one 10ml bottle is approximately equivalent to more than a carton of cigarettes.

Most of the harmful chemicals produced by traditional cigarettes are a result of the burning of the tobacco. Since e-cigarettes don’t burn anything, there are far fewer unanticipated chemicals produced. In fact, the American Association of Public Health Physicians states they are much less harmful than tobacco-based cigarettes.

The majority of e-cigarette companies use propylene glycol as the base in the e-fluid. Propylene glycol is FDA-approved and has been used in foods for decades. E-cigarettes, on the other hand, are not approved by the FDA due to a disagreement about whose jurisdiction they fall under (the ATF’s or the FDA’s). Since they contain no tobacco, the ATF insists they don’t fall under their jurisdiction, and since they are considered a tobacco-substitute, the FDA refuses to approve them. Despite this, propylene glycol has been shown to offer protection from several respiratory ailments including pneumonia, bronchitis, and even the flu.

In spite of their advantages, e-cigarettes still deliver nicotine to the user, which is addictive and harmful. For this reason, they should not be used by under-age individuals, or those with breathing difficulties. E-cigarettes are not effective for quitting smoking, as some believe.

With all of the benefits e cigarettes offer over traditional cigarettes in cost-savings, convenience, and reduced health-impact, e-cigarettes are an excellent alternative to smoking. With all of the restrictions placed on smokers today, e-cigarettes offer a way to compromise with non-smoking friends and relatives, while still allowing you to enjoy a satisfying smoke.
