Although eighty percent of adults will suffer at some stage with lower back pain it still remains very much a mystery to the medical world. Are we missing something? Is the answer a little closer to home?

Have you ever gotten a medical examination for your lower back pain only to find that they are unable to find any specific cause? The doctor might then tell you that it’s “all in your mind” or you could be suspected of faking a pain to get some time off work. Thing is, if their examination cannot find a probable cause, then supposedly nothing is wrong with you. Now this alone isn’t going to help your pain is it?

Medical science does not yet recognize what could be a major cause of back pain. And this factor, in my opinion, is the lost art of ‘Natural Movement’. Most adults have lost this due to the stress and pressures of living in a modern society.

How often are we stuck behind a desk, the wheel of a car or glued to the couch in front of the TV? What is this doing to our backs? We all know that we should be more active but when we exercise can we move as freely and efficiently as we did as young children?

Has your doctor advised exercise? Yes it is true that activity is better than bed rest for your back, but how do you know if you are moving correctly? If posture and the way we move are a cause of lower back pain, are we not making it worse by using our bodies more vigorously?

Before you decide to pickup a new activity, or even start a new exercise program, consider first to look at your most basic of movements – the way you walk, run, sit or even stand. Learn to be aware of the unnecessary stress you could be placing on your back just as how most of us do. This will help you to start treating or preventing pain at the root of the problem.

Muscle re-education can help you reduce the stresses and strains you unknowingly put on your body even if you do not already suffer from pain. It will reduce any lower back pain you suffer or even prevent any future pain. As I’ve been teaching movement and posture re-education, I see many people who are just amazed at how much strains they have placing on their body even for the simplest of tasks after learning a few simple ‘tricks’. They feel ‘lighter’ from the freedom of movement this has given them.
