Life isn’t easy, especially when you’re battling diabetes. In this case, however, your loved one – whether it’s your spouse or companion – has the serious condition. Unfortunately, life can still be frustrating with diabetes. It can even change both of your lives forever and possibly for the worse.

The following tips are aimed at making diabetic life easier for you both. Life is already hard, so why make it harder when love and encouragement can help make it easier?

Tip 1: Educate yourself about diabetes. You are a major part of this diabetic’s life and there are some major facts that you need to know concerning diabetes Information such as the best foods for diabetics to eat and the best ways to prepare them is helpful. Other vital information is the symptoms of high and low blood glucose. Learning this information and more about diabetes will prepare you to live with a diabetic.

Tip 2: Support your loved one. In any relationship having a good communication is very important. It’s even more important when you’re dealing with diabetes. Therefore when your loved one wishes to express their health concerns, listen to them. However, don’t bring annoying communication such as nagging, pleading, or yelling into your relationship. You may think your actions are helping them take care of themselves. However, it’s actually frustrating them to the point of rebellion. Consider this point: if you were the diabetic, would you want your loved one pestering you?

Tip 3: Seek support for yourself. Sometimes your loved one can be very frustrated dealing with this illness. You can try your best to be as supportive as a cheerleader. Sometimes your effort works; other times your loved one extends their frustration towards you. Whether you’re weary from being supportive or hurt from their mood swings, you need to release your emotional distress. Otherwise you could develop your own feelings of frustration, fear, and depression. These aren’t healthy feelings; thus, consider joining an organization for moral support. If you’re uncomfortable talking among a group of strangers, then converse with your minister, physician, a family member, or friend.

Tip 4: Take no claim to the blame game. Blaming does not help. For some people, diabetes is a result of poor lifestyle choices. When this happens, you may be tempted to blame them. By all means, don’t do this. This only worsens the guilt they probably already feel. Instead show your support with love and understanding. This eventually eases their own guilt.

Tip 5: Be patient. Try to be calm and patient and don’t bring yelling and pleading into your relationship. These annoying emotions are just the faces of impatience. And this sort of stress is unwelcoming to your loved one’s health. Therefore, regardless what diabetes is carrying you and your loved one through, always go through it with patience.
