Chiropractic Care As Pain Management For Mesothelioma Patients
According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic doctors “have a deep respect for the human body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication. These doctors devote careful attention to the biomechanics, structure and function of the spine, its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and the role played by the proper function of these systems in the preservation and restoration of health. A doctor of chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.”
In order to help treat and control pain and/or disorders to the spine and musculoskeletal system that controls the body’s movement, chiropractic care is practiced. Chiropractic therapy is a form of alternative medicine that coincides with traditional medical practices and is commonly sought after. A large portion of cancer patients, including those who suffer from asbestos-related cancers such as mesothelioma, choose to visit a chiropractor as part of the treatment plan they have.
Asbestos is a naturally produced mineral that was used in multiple military and industrial settings throughout the 20th century. If exposed to asbestos it can cause a rare and aggressive cancer known as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma’s symptoms can take as long as 50 years to appear. Usually the cancer is advanced and common treatment options are limited by this time.
There were two published studies in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics that examined the cases of two cancer patients. The first case involved a 54-year-old man that was diagnosed with lung cancer, which is often associated with asbestos exposure. One year after surgery, the man experienced only miniscule pain relief and decided to visit a chiropractor. Upon his first visit the man had rapid pain relief and after just two visits he discontinued the use of his pain medications.
Chiropractic care should sound quite appealing to mesothelioma patients who are seeking alternative forms of care, as well as people who hold a belief that the body will naturally heal itself. For cancer patients to have a more comfortable treatment process, chiropractic care should be used. It has been proven to alleviate headaches and movement pains associated with cancer treatment.
